Yesterday my husband spotted a boat out on the Bay. Nothing unusual there.
Then we noticed they had a blue dive flag up! They were diving for oysters on an October morning. VERY cool.
It’s possible they were harvesting. Or they could have been checking up on oysters, as The Chesapeake Bay Foundation regularly does. From an article in 2009, the oyster seeding has been successful, with a better than 50 percent survival rate, but oyster “recruitment,” or natural reproduction, hasn’t been. So monitoring continues.
So boaters: if you happen to see a blue dive flag …
Be sure to keep a safe distance! Somebody could be in the water.
